About calling codes
International calling codes route a phone call from one country to another, using the ITU-T E.164 numbering plan. This directory explains how to dial internationally and lists every code and the destinations it covers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the international dialing prefix?
The international dialing prefix is the sequence you dial to reach a number outside your own country. Most countries use 00 (Europe and much of Asia), while North America uses 011. On a mobile phone the + sign replaces the prefix automatically.
Why do the United States and Canada share +1?
The North American Numbering Plan assigns the shared country code +1 to the United States, Canada, and many Caribbean territories. Area codes within +1 route the call to the right region, which is why you dial +1 then an area code for both countries.
How do I dial internationally step by step?
Dial your international access prefix (00 or 011), then the destination country code, then the local number with any leading trunk zero removed. For example, to call a UK number 020 7946 0000 from the US, dial 011 44 20 7946 0000.
What is the trunk prefix I should drop?
Many countries write local numbers with a leading trunk prefix, such as the 0 in 020 for London. When dialing from abroad you drop that leading zero, because it is only needed for calls within the country.
Why do some calling codes change?
Codes are managed by the ITU and change when countries split, merge, or renumber. When this happens there is usually a transition period, and the new code is published in updated directories like this one.
